Group R - Elli's Yodio - Week 4

  1. That is interesting that he changed his book choice. I am surprised he couldn't remember anything he read. My student remembered way more than I ever could about what he read. I was really surprised. I am a lot like Brian where I read for purpose and usually only remember what I think I need to. I find it easier to know what I am looking for before I am reading. Otherwise, I don't remember much. I wish I wasn't that way, but I am. I find it interesting that he didn't think you would ask him questions afterward. I wonder how much of a difference it would have made.

  2. I am surprised he was not nervous about being recorded.
Do you remember when . . . Tovani mentions a student reading "The Grapes of Wrath" and then, when asked where she was in the book, she said she didn't know and what was worse, she knew she had questions too answer? That is what is interesting about reading, because I think that people tend to think that because you can say something (as in, pronounce it) and because you can get through a particular text aloud, that must mean you are "reading" it. So then we think "how could he/she read that whole thing and not know what was happening?" I guess that Jeremy is along the right lines in pointing out that he could be a person who reads for a purpose--you remember what you sought out to know. The person who reads for "fun" is looking for "fun" and I think, then, remembers the "good" parts of a story.

  3. "I didn't realize I was going to be answering questions at the end." Sounds like he had a predisposition that he was being analyzed on his ability to read, so he was not focusing on the content or reading for comprehension. This tells me that the student is not much of a reader and probably almost never reads for personal enjoyment. Would I be correct in this assumption?

  4. Oh sad...he thinks that the news is a bad thing! Changing texts was a nice change for him...it seems that it worked out with understanding as well! His answers to your questions are going to make great work for your "action plan." I really wish that I had more material for "Freddy."
