Interesting idea about where students find their reading materials. The problem isn't just books, it is everywhere they access words, ideas and language. The "real world" is much more diverse than just the school library. Kids are learning to read on facebook and TeenBeat, no? I can't wait to see how you integrate media/technology into your classroom!
Good connection--we learn to read much in the same way that we learn to speak. And YES we need to mirror the teaching of reading process with the process of learning language.
Media literacy is essential! If you check out the National Council of Teachers of English website they have much information about media literacy. I wish we had more time because we would spend a lot of time on this.
