    I'm glad you figured out the technology! So, you say that reading involves making sense of print. Do we "read" anything else? How might your response to this question affect you as a teacher? What do our students read in our lasses? How can we help them to read these things? jill

  2. Hi Roman,
    I like your definitions of learning and reading, that reading is interpreting written language and learning is acquiring knowledge. To learning, I might add the application of knowledge, such as applying it to one's own life or a specific context. One can memorize facts or dates without doing this, but until it is made truly relevant and important to a student it will not be memorable or impact them in the long-term. This would also fit what you said about being able to learn without reading, as one can learn through experience - but reading offers the ability to learn from others' experiences. I think that is why, as you say, we can't read without learning, even if we don't intend to. Our minds will take in some information about the world or humanity from reading text, whether it is a novel or a facebook status.

  3. Nice to meet you, Roman. I enjoyed your definition of "reading" and "learning" via the Yodio. Good observation about learning coming from multiple inputs, one of which may be reading. I think I took the assignment maybe too literally, it is great to hear the other group members' perspective on the questions.

  4. Thank you all for leaving comments. I realized I wasn't properly prepared and strangely was struck with stage fright. I'm glad you all were able to make sense of my ramblings...
    In retrospect I could have worded things more clearly; for example we do "read" images (nonverbal, hieroglyphics, weather patterns). And yes, application of knowledge is critical.

  5. It will be interesting as our students read maps, instructions, and schedules as they are in our classroom, along with textbooks and worksheets. I was trying to come up with all of the things the kids read in the room, whether it be over my shoulder e-mails (yikes!) or their own games on the computers. Students come into class and read objectives for the day and who is missing part of their break. There is so much reading involved, even when it is not "reading" time!
