  1. I like how you connect the technical definition to real life examples with your daughter and husband. I think this is a great example of reading and learning and how they are connected.

  2. I enjoyed when you talked about de-coding of the symbols. I thought it was a great comparison to the idea of your daughter just saying the words, but not truly understanding what they mean.
    I also found it interesting that you brought up the piece of culture into the reading process. I agree that this can make a big difference in the reading process.

  3. Excellent point about what you learned about reading from your daughter. Kids can parrot back words to us, but they don't necessarily know what they are saying. They can say words, but they don't know what they mean. They can sound out letters, but they may not yet have a sense that all of those letters together make words. When we reduce language to its smallest parts, then it can become meaningless, frustrating, and confusing for them. Also, when we push them to do things that they are developmentally ready, the same things can happen. Thanks for sharing that story Becky.
