  1. Wow, you are a math guy. It was great how you gave statistics about his accuracy and went that in depth. I have never done anything like this, so I wasn't so prepared and didn't have much of a strategy going in other than to record him reading and analyze his mannerisms as he went and then analyze his reading afterward by using the recording. I am not surprised that your student chose that article, I have seen Schrader's beard and it is ridiculous. It sounds like you did a very thorough job analyzing your reader.

  2. I am going to echo Jeremy...WOW, you are a math guy. You left me feeling stupified. I am jealous of your technique, and I don't know that I can add anything to improve your knowledge or your thinking here...

Have you tried to get him to read math text...like an intro to a math chapter?

  3. I love that he wanted to read about beard growing! When I asked my student if he would like it if teachers would incorporate his favorite things into their subject matter he nearly laughed in my face. He asked me why he would want that? What we find obvious may not be so obvious or even accurate. Would you like it if you got a quiz on the amount of sugar everytime you went to Cold Stone? Combinations are not always a good idea, but if you're on a diet, maybe it is??? :)

I think the point about immediate correction is so true. If my boss corrects me, I feel defensive and small. I don't always react that way, because as an adult I've learned to channel my feelings and react slowly, against my will.

I would also like to know how your student would do with a math intro. Maybe I will do that with my kiddo, he loves math and doesn't so much love Language Arts. Just my luck!

  4. Giving options was a good idea. The staff beard-off is also big in Mapleton. Having the statistics is a nice starting point for your research. His making inferences deficiency is interesting. Background on this would be good to know for your "action plan."
