Literacy - getting information across to someone. I love that definition. It's in totally accessible language, but covers the very complex ideas around literacy in many ways.
Your application of literacy to math is spot on, as far as I can tell. Showing work is literacy involved! Whether it's numbers, symbols, or letters (which are also just symbols), we want to communicate our ideas and thought processes to each other. Showing your work in math guides your own thought process, as well as created a shared understanding with the person reading your work about how you "got there".

Nice application!
If you can't convey the information, the kids can't learn.
ReplyDeleteWriting out the steps is exceptionally helpful. Kids helping themselves is really hard to get to, but nice when it happens!
